Rizal Humanist is based off of the hand-done lettering of Filipino signage, common throughout all the motorways from Manila to the provinces. This unique script is created using a characteristic set of brush strokes.
Using a flat brush, it is held at an oblique angle to create diagonal terminals, and high-contrast bowl forms. I sought to define a new set of humanist rules with a Filipino personality.
Rizal Humanist is named after Jose Rizal, a Filipino writer, philosopher, revolutionary, and national hero. He represents the dream of the Filiipino people to become an independent country from the long line of foreign rulers for centuries.
The letterforms themselves are used primarily on transportation. Everything from bicycle pedicabs, taxis, jeepneys, trucks, and busses use the same set of brush strokes. Hover below to see some samples of the original inspiration.
